Do Ghosts Really Exist or Are They Just a Trick of the Mind?

In summary, the article on Cracked discusses the scientific explanation behind ghost sightings, stating that they are likely a result of perceptual aberrations and the brain's tendency to interpret stimuli as intentional human contact. The article also mentions the concept of infrasound and its potential role in creating ghostly experiences. However, the validity of this explanation is still debated and should be taken with a grain of salt.

I saw this on cracked, so take it with a pinch of salt.

What do you think?

Ghosts are an experiential phenomenon, not a physical one. "Ghosts" happen when we experience a perceptual aberration. Usually the brain takes over and compares the input (i.e. audio, visual, or touch) and interprets it as the closest similar event that we are comfortable with. Most often this comes are "intentional human contact." This often becomes reinforced by our desire to believe that we survive death.

That being said, the concept of infrasound has been around for a while. Naval servicemen experienced the same thing on submarines where very low frequencies can be carried through the hull of the submersible.

Last I heard, it turned out it was not because of the perception of sound, but because the skull surrounding the occipital lobe would vibrate at frequencies between 16Hz and 20Hz. The same effect can be induced by attaching low voltage electrodes to the back of the head and applying a very small AC current around the frequency. (Can't find link, so you might have to take this last paragraph with the same grain of salt as the previous article.)

I believe this is true for some, but perhaps not all ghost reports.

You are excluding the idea of genuine unexplained phenomenon and positing an unprovable theory as fact. Why?

You are stating a default assumption as fact. We don't know that for a fact. Stating what we expect, as fact, is intellectually dishonest.

What is a "ghost explanation"?

A "ghost explanation" refers to a scientific or rational explanation for a phenomenon or event that is commonly attributed to ghosts or the supernatural. It is an attempt to understand the underlying causes of these experiences using data and evidence rather than supernatural beliefs.

How do scientists explain ghost sightings?

There are several potential scientific explanations for ghost sightings, including pareidolia (the tendency to see recognizable patterns in random stimuli), infrasound (low-frequency vibrations that can cause feelings of unease), and sleep paralysis (a temporary inability to move or speak during sleep). Other explanations may involve environmental factors, such as drafts or faulty wiring, that can create unusual sights or sounds.

Can ghosts be detected or measured using scientific methods?

No, there is currently no scientific evidence that ghosts exist or can be detected using scientific methods. While some researchers have attempted to use equipment such as EMF meters and thermal cameras to detect ghosts, these methods have not been proven to be reliable or accurate in detecting supernatural phenomena.

Why do people believe in ghosts despite lack of scientific evidence?

Belief in ghosts is often rooted in cultural and personal beliefs, rather than scientific evidence. Many people may also find comfort in the idea of an afterlife or the continued existence of loved ones, leading them to interpret unusual experiences as evidence of ghosts. Additionally, media and popular culture often perpetuate the belief in ghosts, making it a widely accepted idea in many societies.

Are there any scientific studies on ghosts or the supernatural?

While there have been some studies on the psychological and cultural aspects of belief in ghosts and the supernatural, there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of ghosts or the supernatural. Any claims of scientific studies supporting these beliefs are often based on flawed methodology or have not been replicated by other researchers.
