I like Jim Al-Khalili's documentaries for BBC Horizon, particularly:

Atom (3 parts)
Chemistry: A Volatile History (3 parts)
Shock & Awe: The Story of Electricity (3 parts)
The Secret Life Of Chaos
Science & Islam (3 parts)

and also Marcus du Sautoy's - The Story of Maths (3 parts)

None of them go particularly deep, but give a nice history and overview of the subjects without the OMG TIME TRAVEL moments that seem to litter a lot of pop-sci programs.
