That wasn't a speculation, but a (perhaps unjustified) conclusion. The standard model asserts that SOME particles get their mass from interactions with the Higgs field. If you invert that and say (note that justification for doing so is missing) that EVERY interaction with the Higgs field gives mass, then massless particles like the photon, gluons, and the supposed graviton must not interact with the Higgs field.
