Gravity doughnut may solve time travel problem

In summary, an Israeli theoretical physicist has proposed a solution to the problem of time travel using a doughnut-shaped gravity field. This concept eliminates the need for exotic matter and could potentially get around previous limitations on time travel.

"Gravity doughnut" may solve time travel problem

One of the major difficulties of traveling backwards in time has just been solved, according to an Israeli theoretical physicist. And the solution, he says, is doughnut-shaped...

...This is where Amos Ori from Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, comes in. He says that according to Einstein's theories, space can be twisted enough to create a local gravity field that looks like a doughnut of some arbitrary size. The gravitational field lines circle around the outside of this doughnut, so that space and time are both tightly curved back on themselves. Crucially, this does away with the need for any hypothetical exotic matter. [continued]

Ori is captivated by the concept of self-interacting gravitational fields, which I do not find very interesting. It's the sort of unobserved 'ultraviolet catastrophe' that signals an incomplete theory.

This is still interesting, because according to the author it does get around Hawking's chronology protection result (Phys. Rev. D46 (1992) 603).

1. What is a gravity doughnut?

A gravity doughnut is a theoretical object that is formed by rotating a large mass at high speeds, creating a doughnut-shaped region of intense gravitational forces.

2. How does a gravity doughnut solve the time travel problem?

According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, gravity can bend the fabric of space-time. A gravity doughnut can manipulate this bending of space-time to create a closed timelike curve, allowing for potential time travel.

3. Is time travel possible with a gravity doughnut?

While the idea of using a gravity doughnut for time travel is still theoretical and has not been proven, it is a concept that is being studied by scientists and has potential for further exploration.

4. What are the potential implications of time travel with a gravity doughnut?

If time travel were to be achieved with a gravity doughnut, it could have significant implications for our understanding of the universe and could potentially lead to breakthroughs in areas such as physics and astronomy.

5. Are there any ethical concerns with using a gravity doughnut for time travel?

As with any type of time travel, there are potential ethical concerns such as altering the course of history or creating paradoxes. These concerns would need to be carefully considered and addressed before any real-world application of a gravity doughnut for time travel.
