why are scientists now more concerned about carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas rather than methane for example?

Because more carbon dioxide is generated from biological sources (animal respiration) and the combustion of fossil fuels on an annual basis than methane is. At least with mineral methane (natural gas), you can burn it to make more carbon dioxide.
