    Thanks, y'all.

Yesterday was one of my worst days in the lab. My beautifully homogeneous sample, just went bad out of the blue (quite likely, I did something to it...just don't know what, yet). If I'm very lucky, it will take a day or two to merely nurse it back to good health. And to add to that, a differential amplifier that I'd put over a week of work into suddenly started injecting several nanovolts of noise into the measurement - I had to pull it. Now, i'm going to have to take it completely apart (again) to debug and fix it.

Sounds like a good excuse to just take a day off and celebrate your birthday.

That puts in mind what a student was telling me yesterday. She had gone on a job interview, and they were asking her some pretty standard questions off a form. One of them was, "Have you ever gotten results you didn't like." She told me she wasn't sure if she made a face or not when they asked that, but her answer was, "Of course, that's research!" And she added that her entire first year of research went that way. She got a second interview though. Of course those were exactly the types of answers they were looking for, though perhaps without the rolling of eyes when they asked them.

    So...you're in good company.
