Homework Help: Heat loss from box surface

  1. Nov 11, 2008 #1

How can I determine the heat loss (to air) from a box of a specific material, with a heat source inside of it?

Also, how do you calculate the heat/energy loss of a heated gas into ambient air.

This is usually not treated in physics classes, rather in mechanical or chemical engineering classes that deal with heat transfer by convection.

Is this a specific homework problem, or just for general knowledge? At any rate, you're probably better off asking in the engineering section.

Of course, the steady state heat loss rate would equal the heat generation rate, but that's probably not very helpful.
