What are the key principles of designing an efficient exhaust system?

Just joined to get some info on the physics of exhaust system design, found this forum very interesting and decided to join. I teach English, not physics and am not an expert on anything except that i am willing to try something new and apply engineering, and of course physics, to get an accurate model of what it is I am trying to accomplish.
