I am having trouble with my DVD-R drive.

The computer is one year old. In the beginning all was well - and then I bought new CD-R discs which the burner rejected continuously. Assuming it might be that it just didn't like the discs, I didn't let it bother me and ignored it.

Today I bought a new pack of DVD-R discs (different from the ones I usually use). Yesterday it burned a DVD disc beautifully, but today it gives me an error ("Illegal disc") and shoots the disc out.

I would like to fix this problem, I have about 100 discs that will become useless if I don't (at least - who knows which discs I can buy?).
I have tried uploading the driver - I have the best driver in the whole wide world. Thinking it might need a firmware flash, I checked came to the conclusion that I have the latest firmware.

Here's some basic information:

1. Toshiba Sattelite A200-1MY.
2. Running Windows Vista 32bit.
3. TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device.
4. Firmware version: TO04.
5. Running mode: Ultra DMA 2.

And here's the log file from the newly failed DVD burning trials (the second part will come in a second message - it's too long):

Sorry for posting all the log... if I knew what was relevant from it I would have left only that, but I'm not clever enough...

Hopefully someone here is more clever than me (well, more clever is easy, but they need to be extremely more clever than me, because I don't know SQUAT! :) ).

illegal disc, ah, try checking the area specification of your DVD-RW drive or the discs that you are writing data to. Discs and the DVD drive is specified to read/write discs of a certain area code and if that fails to match it would pop up an error, at least u can try doing this, this is similar to discs which have video content that is distributed around the globe, the same disc may run in your country but not mine. The drivers and and about the log, that much detail about writing sectors etc is not required here, afaik.

1. Why is my DVD-R drive failing?

There could be several reasons for a failing DVD-R drive. It could be due to physical damage, outdated drivers, or corrupted software. It could also be a sign of a failing hardware component, such as the laser lens or motor.

2. How can I fix my failing DVD-R drive?

The solution to fixing a failing DVD-R drive depends on the root cause. If it is a software issue, updating the drivers or reinstalling the software may solve the problem. If it is a hardware issue, it may require professional repair or replacement of the faulty component.

3. Can I repair a failing DVD-R drive myself?

It is not recommended to attempt to repair a failing DVD-R drive yourself, especially if it involves opening the hardware. This can further damage the drive and potentially void any warranty. It is best to seek professional help if you are not familiar with hardware repairs.

4. How can I prevent my DVD-R drive from failing?

To prevent your DVD-R drive from failing, make sure to handle it with care and avoid physical damage. Keep the drivers and software up to date, and regularly clean the drive to prevent dust buildup. Also, avoid using low-quality discs, as they can damage the drive over time.

5. Is it worth repairing a failing DVD-R drive, or should I just replace it?

It depends on the severity of the issue and the cost of repair. If the repair is minor and cost-effective, it may be worth fixing the drive. However, if the issue is major and the repair cost is close to the cost of a new drive, it may be more practical to replace it.
