How a vacuum works

  1. Jan 14, 2013 #1
I'm not exactly sure how a vacuum works. I understand that there are machines (motors?), as in a vacuum cleaner, that suck air. There are other vacuum designs though, if I am not mistaken. It is these that I am not sure about. So how do these work?
