how do i draw the structure of O-iodotoluene?
what does the O- stand for?
It comes form "Ortho" ("straight" in Ancient Greek). You know that on a cycle of benzene,2 radicals can ocupy 3 distinct positions
"ortho","meta" and "para".In this case,it's Iod and methyl.
Could that O mean Ortho? Aromatic coumpounds can be said to be para, ortho or meta directing, depending on where the substituent is likely to be placed. Sounds familiar?
Uh, oh... Dextercyboy was too fast. :)
