How to build a solar mini car

I am trying to build a solar mini car for a physics project. I have a 1.5-3 volt dc motor and a 1.5 volt solar panel. I have wheels and axels. I am confused about how to attach my motor to my wheels. Some websites say buy a small and large pulley and attach the small pulley to the motor and the large to the right axel and then use a rubber band to attach the pulleys but I don't understand how to. Other places say to buy gears but I have no idea how that works.
