How to determine force on a twisted 3 strand rope?

  1. Feb 23, 2010 #1
(this is a project for church, and I'm not an engineer so I apologize in advance for any incorrect use of terms)

Let's say I have multiple ropes that can each pull 50 lbs. Two questions:

    1) If I use 3 ropes in parallel and tie them to a single object would the total weight I can pull be 3 x 50lbs = 150lbs?

    2) If I took these three ropes and tightly twisted them together (would almost look like a single rope,) how would I calculate how much weight I could pull? Would it be an exponential increase?
