How to format hard drive/reinstall WinXP

In summary, to format a Dell laptop's hard drive and reinstall Windows, you need to boot from the Windows XP CD and follow the instructions to delete the current partition, create a new one and format it as NTFS quickly. Make sure to change the boot device order in the BIOS to boot from the CD first.

Hey guys

My buddy has a Dell laptop. We are trying to format his hard drive and reinstall Windows. What is the best way to do this? I tried format c: in a dos box, but obviously it wouldn't let that go because Windows was still loaded on top.

What do you suggest?

Thank you

Boot from the Windows XP CD and when it asks you about the parititions I think you press D to delete it, then create another pariton and format it ntfs quick. Its all pretty straight foward. Just follow the instructions the installer gives you.

If you don't know how to boot from the CD go into the bios and change the boot device order so that the CDROM is first.

for reaching out with your question. Reformatting a hard drive and reinstalling Windows can seem like a daunting task, but it is actually a fairly straightforward process. Here are the steps you can follow to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows XP:

1. Backup any important files: Before you begin the formatting process, make sure to backup any important files or documents that you want to keep. This is important because formatting your hard drive will erase all data on it.

2. Boot from the Windows XP installation disc: Insert the Windows XP installation disc into your computer's CD/DVD drive and restart your computer. When prompted, press any key to boot from the disc.

3. Choose the installation option: Once the disc has booted, you will be presented with a few different options. Choose the option to install Windows XP. This will begin the installation process.

4. Delete the existing partition: During the installation process, you will be asked to choose a partition to install Windows on. Select the existing partition and press "D" on your keyboard to delete it.

5. Create a new partition: After deleting the existing partition, you will see unallocated space on your hard drive. Select this space and press "C" to create a new partition.

6. Format the new partition: Select the new partition and press "Enter" to begin the formatting process. Choose the option to format the partition using the NTFS file system.

7. Install Windows: Once the formatting is complete, the installation process will begin. Follow the prompts to complete the installation of Windows XP.

8. Install drivers and software: After Windows is installed, you will need to install any necessary drivers for your hardware and any software programs that you want to use.

Congratulations, you have now successfully formatted your hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. Keep in mind that this process will erase all data on your hard drive, so make sure to backup any important files beforehand. Also, if you are not comfortable performing these steps on your own, it may be best to seek assistance from a professional. Good luck!
