Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the stress experienced by a manual hydraulic car jack when holding a load of 4000 lbs. Participants are exploring the specifics of stress calculations related to the hydraulic piston and other components of the jack, as well as the need for detailed information to provide accurate assessments.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the stress on a hydraulic car jack under a 4000 lb load.
  • Another suggests consulting a professional engineer for a detailed assessment, indicating that more specifics about the jack are necessary.
  • A participant asks for clarification on which component's stress is of interest and requests details about the diameter and cross-sectional area of that component.
  • There is a focus on the hydraulic piston, with one participant noting its diameter of about 1 inch and questioning its ability to withstand stress.
  • Another participant argues that the piston is unlikely to be the failure point when the jack is overstressed, prompting a discussion about which component might fail first and the nature of that failure.
  • A participant points out that stress is defined as force per unit area, suggesting that additional information is needed for a more specific answer.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on which component of the hydraulic car jack is most critical in terms of stress and potential failure, indicating that there is no consensus on the matter. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the specifics of stress calculations and failure points.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not provided complete details about the hydraulic jack's components, and assumptions about the failure modes are not fully explored. The discussion lacks definitive calculations or established parameters for stress analysis.

I suggest hiring a professional engineer.

Otherwise, you'll need a lot more detail on the specifics of the car jack.

faiz513: For which component in the hydraulic car jack do you need to know the stress? And what is the diameter and cross-sectional area of that component?

i need to know the stress the hydraulic piston, which has a diameter of about 1 inch is a able to withstand?

The piston is not going to be the part that fails when the jack is overstressed. Which part do you think will fail first, and how will it fail... ?

Bit of an elementary question really. Stress is force/unit area.

Unless you want a more specific and/or useful answer more info is needed.
