actualy he didn't found iot in the cathode ray experiment ,it was another experiment conducted by him to find it.
In the experiment he created electric and magnetic field perpendiculer to each other then with the help of x-ray he knocked the electrons out of the oil drop and then by using the electric and magnetic fields simultaneous he derived the relation.
