Calculating Momentum for Egg Drop Project

In summary, to calculate the momentum of a standard egg (.05kg) dropped from 1, 2, and 3 meter heights, use standard vertical motion equations/formulae to calculate the velocity. Remember to use the correct mass of 50g for the egg.

From those heights, air resistance should be negligible, so use standard vetical motion equations/formulae to calculate the velocity.

Momentum is merely mv and you know the mass - make sure you are using 50g eggs and not 45g, 55g, 60g, or 65g which are other common sizes sold here.

1. How does an egg drop project demonstrate scientific principles?

The egg drop project is a common experiment used to demonstrate concepts such as gravity, force, and energy. By designing a contraption to protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a height, students can observe and understand how different materials and structures affect the outcome of the experiment.

2. What materials are typically used in an egg drop project?

Common materials used in an egg drop project include cardboard, bubble wrap, cotton balls, and straws. These materials are used to create a protective structure around the egg to absorb the impact of the drop.

3. How do you determine the success of an egg drop project?

The success of an egg drop project is typically determined by whether or not the egg remains intact after being dropped from a designated height. If the egg does not break, the project is considered successful. Other factors that can be used to determine success include the creativity and effectiveness of the design.

4. What are some tips for designing a successful egg drop contraption?

Some tips for designing a successful egg drop contraption include using lightweight materials, creating a cushioning system to absorb the impact, and making sure the egg is securely held in place. It is also important to test and make adjustments to the design before the final drop.

5. What can be learned from an egg drop project?

An egg drop project can teach students about the laws of physics, such as gravity and momentum, as well as the principles of engineering and design. It also encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills as students work together to create a successful contraption.
