In summary, the 1995 government shutdown over the Grand Canyon was a battle between the state of Arizona and the federal government. The state wanted to keep the park open, while the federal government wanted to close it down.

Does anyone believe that Harry Reid's wife won't be able to have a cholesterol test? Maybe Harry will start up a non-profit chain of women's health clinics?

Why on Earth would Harry Reid's wife get her cholesterol tests at Ft Sumter when Harry Reid is a Senator in Nevada?

Actually, the question is why will she lose any healthcare benefits if Planned Parenthood is de-funded - when Harry has (Fed Gov't) employer paid insurance?

It's Friday - Harry also commented that US Government owns approximately 83% of Nevada - maybe Government Casino is next? On the other hand, it would probably lose too much money.

On a more serious note - will the AZ National Guard need to secure the border - or are Border Patrol Officers considered essential?

the bigger question is, if the Border Patrol isn't there to look the other way as guns are smuggled across the border, how will mexican drug lords be able to fight turf wars ? how can we manage to keep oil cheap if mayhem isn't allowed to proceed SOTB?

1. Will Arizona actually try to take over the Grand Canyon if the US government shuts down?

No, Arizona has no legal authority to take over the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon National Park is managed by the National Park Service, which is a federal agency. Only the federal government has the power to make decisions about national parks.

2. Why would people think Arizona would try to take over the Grand Canyon during a government shutdown?

There is a misconception that states have the right to take control of national parks within their borders if the federal government is unable to maintain them. However, this is not the case. National parks are protected by federal laws and can only be managed by the federal government.

3. Is there any historical precedent for a state taking control of a national park during a government shutdown?

No, there is no historical precedent for a state taking control of a national park during a government shutdown. National parks have remained under federal control during past government shutdowns, even if some services were temporarily suspended.

4. What would happen if Arizona did try to take over the Grand Canyon during a government shutdown?

If Arizona attempted to take over the Grand Canyon during a government shutdown, it would be a violation of federal law and could result in legal action by the federal government. Additionally, the National Park Service has contingency plans in place to ensure the protection and management of national parks during government shutdowns.

5. Are there any other options for managing the Grand Canyon during a government shutdown?

Yes, the federal government could enter into agreements with the state of Arizona or other entities to temporarily manage the Grand Canyon during a government shutdown. However, any decisions about the management of national parks would ultimately be made by the federal government once the shutdown ends.
