Exploring the Mind-Dependence of Matter: A Scientific Perspective

In summary, the conversation touches on the topic of whether the concept of "matter" is dependent on the mind. While some philosophers discuss the idea that something only exists when it is known or observed, the theory is not currently being actively explored. The suggestion is made to watch a video for more information. It is mentioned that it is more probable that the mind is dependent on matter. One participant acknowledges that Philosophy is not within the scope of the Physics Forums.

is 'matter' mind-dependent?

I see many philosophers talking that, there is some science on this ?

Well, there is a theory where something only "is" when someone knows about or looks at it. So in some way it is but there isn't much developing on this theory as of now. If you want to learn more about this, I recommend that you watch the video "The Fabric of the Cosmos" based on Brian Greene's book.

'More likely the mind is matter dependent.

1. What is the definition of "matter"?

The term "matter" refers to anything that has mass and takes up space in the physical world. This includes everything from atoms and molecules to planets and stars.

2. Can matter exist without a mind to perceive it?

This is a highly debated question in the scientific community. Some argue that matter can exist independently of a mind, while others believe that it is only through the perception of a mind that matter can truly exist.

3. How does quantum mechanics play a role in the mind-dependent nature of matter?

Quantum mechanics, the branch of physics that studies the behavior of matter on a microscopic level, has challenged our understanding of the mind-matter relationship. Some interpretations of quantum mechanics suggest that the act of observation by a mind can affect the behavior of matter.

4. Are there any scientific experiments that have been conducted to investigate the mind-dependency of matter?

There have been numerous experiments conducted in the field of quantum mechanics to explore the mind-matter relationship. Some notable examples include the double-slit experiment and the delayed-choice quantum eraser experiment, which have both shown that the behavior of matter can be influenced by the mind.

5. How does the mind-dependency of matter impact our understanding of reality?

The mind-dependency of matter has significant implications for our understanding of reality. It challenges the traditional notion of an objective reality, where matter exists independently of our perception. It also raises questions about the role of consciousness in shaping our understanding of the world around us.
