In summary, the total gravitational potential energy of the three masses, located at specific distances and forming a right angle, is -1.483*10^-7 J. The back of the book gives a slightly different answer of -1.96*10^-7 J.

Homework Statement

Find the total gravitational potential energy of the three masses.

Homework Equations

U=-GMm/r

The Attempt at a Solution

U between the 10 kg mass & the 20kg mass
-(6.67*10^-11)(20kg)(10kg)/.20 m = -6.67 * 10 ^-8 J

U between the 20kg mass and the 5 kg mass
-(6.67*10^-11)(20kg)(5kg)/.10m = -6.67*10^-8 J

U between the 10 kg mass & the 5 kg mass
-(6.67*10^-11)(10kg)(5kg)/.2236 m = -1.49 * 10^-8 J

adding them up I got -1.483*10^-7 J

but the back of my book says -1.96 * 10^-7 J

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi bcjochim07,

The image file is not ready to view. Is it simple enough to describe in words?

A 10 kg mass is located 20 cm directly above a 20 kg mass. And 10 cm to the right of the 20kg mass is a 5kg mass. The masses form a right angle

Your answer looks right to me.

1. Is it possible for my book to be wrong?

Yes, it is possible for a book to contain incorrect information. Authors are human and can make mistakes, and new information or discoveries may also contradict previous information in a book.

2. How can I tell if my book is wrong?

One way to determine if your book is wrong is to fact-check the information using reliable sources. You can also look for inconsistencies or logical errors in the book.

3. What should I do if I think my book is wrong?

If you believe your book is wrong, you can contact the author or publisher to voice your concerns. You can also share your findings with others and encourage them to fact-check the book as well.

4. Can a book be partially wrong?

Yes, a book can contain both correct and incorrect information. It is important to critically evaluate the information presented and not assume everything in the book is completely accurate.

5. How can I avoid relying on a wrong book?

To avoid relying on a wrong book, it is important to diversify your sources and fact-check information using multiple reliable sources. You can also seek out reviews or critiques of the book before reading it.
