AI Thread Summary
Health authorities in the Philippines have issued warnings against traditional Holy Week practices such as crucifixion and flagellation due to health risks. Dr. Luningning Villa, head of the Department of Health's infectious disease unit, emphasized the dangers of infections from unsterilized nails and whips used during these rituals. Despite these warnings, some participants continue to engage in these practices as a form of religious expression. The discussion reflects a mix of disbelief and concern regarding the motivations behind such extreme acts, questioning the understanding of their religious significance and the potential dangers involved. The conversation also touches on the controversial nature of allowing tourists to witness these events, with some expressing discomfort over the spectacle of suffering as entertainment.

Tourists here to see Filipinos crucify selves

...Health authorities have cautioned penitents against traditional -- but risky -- Holy Week activities, such as crucifixion and flagellation.

..(They're part of) tradition but from the health aspect, we do not encourage them," said Dr. Luningning Villa, head of the Department of Health's infectious disease unit.

..."Just imagine all the infectious agents in a river, not to mention those present in the nails and whips," Villa explained.

...If penitents insist on being crucified or whipped, they should get the whip or nails properly sterilized, she said. [continued]

That's truly scary...that people even need to be warned crucifixion is dangerous.  You would think knowing that even the son of God died by crucifixion (I'm assuming those trying this believe that story) might be enough to hint that there's something inherently dangerous about it. I have to admit there's a little voice in the back of my head asking why bother telling them it's dangerous if they don't know it already.

I saw a thing on this on tv. They know its not safe, they know they could die or whatever, but its a religious thing. You know how people can be about religious things. Actually, i think its kinda weird that tourists are even allowed to watch, and really sick actually. Its one thing to get crucified because of a belief, its another thing to watch someone do it cause it looks cool.

to make it more real they should offer death row inmates choice of dying on the cross instead on electric chair.

The thing that always gets me about the superfreaks is have they even thought about what they are doing from either a practical or religious standpoint? The whole point of Christianity is that Jesus died on the cross so you don't have to.

I think you've answered your own question. Or, perhaps it would make them better than god, not just followers, if they can survive what the son of god could not? I don't try to understand them, it would only make me crazier than they are.

You are crazier than them, and so am I, and I suspect a few others around here. The difference is that they're stupid crazy. Our craziness leads us along new intellectual pathways; theirs blocks them off. :approve:

Its like wiping the arm of a death row inmate with alcohol before they needle him with lethal injection to kill him. Dont want him to get an infection now do we...

It comes from stuff like this:
1 Peter 4:
12Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
