Joris van Hoboken's thesis on Platonic solids,Kleinian singularities and ADE

But it's great to see that people are still interested in my thesis, so I'll try to make sure it won't be lost again.Joris van HobokenIn summary, the conversation discusses a thesis by Joris van Hoboken on Platonic solids, binary polyhedral groups, Kleinian singularities, and Lie algebras of type A,D,E. The thesis is from 2002 and was originally available online, but has since gone missing. The conversation includes a link to a copy of the thesis, discussions on the importance of archiving theses, and an update from Joris van Hoboken on his current work.

In "week182", back in 2002, I referred to this very nice thesis:

Joris van Hoboken, Platonic solids, binary polyhedral groups, Kleinian
singularities and Lie algebras of type A,D,E, Master's Thesis, University of
Amsterdam, 2002, available at
http://www.science.uva.nl/research/math/Onderwijs/examen/2002/scriptiejoris.ps

Now I'm studying this stuff again. There are cool relations to ALE
spaces and string theory, and lots more.

Alas, I didn't keep a copy! It seems to be gone. James Dolan and
I can't find it using Google or the "wayback" web archive. I can't
locate van Hoboken, either.

Does anyone have a copy, please?

This is another reason people should put their theses on the arXiv!
Universities should also keep electronic copies of theses in some
publicly available electronic form.

Hello John Baez
Is this the paper you're looking for?

If you cannot download it, I've got a copy!

Got it! Excellent! Sam Wormley gave me a copy, and I'll make it
available here:

http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/joris_van_hoboken_platonic.pdf

It's a nice description of some incredibly cool stuff. Check it out!

Its on the same set of servers, just moved around a bit.

Google scholar lists 4 different versions. The second gets you there.

I was able to pull it off the wayback machine just fine. Here's a
copy:

Looks neat. And I certainly agree with you on arxiving theses. They
often make great reading, as you get a youthfull perspective on issues.

Joris van Hoboken's thesis in mathematics

I got hinted by my former professor Koornwinder of the University of Amsterdam that my thesis (Platonic Solids, Binary Polyhedral Groups, Kleinian Sigularities and Lie Algebras of Type A,D,E) is a little hard to find. I started a blog several moths ago and made a post there, so it will be easy to find:

http://www.jorisvanhoboken.nl/?p=10

The file is here:
http://www.jorisvanhoboken.nl/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/platonic-solids-binary-polyhedral-groups-kleinian-singularities-and-lie-algebras-of-type-ade.pdf

By the way, I became a legal researcher, in the field of Internet Law and Freedom of Expression, so I'm not working on this wonderful stuff anymore.

1. What is the main topic of Joris van Hoboken's thesis?

The main topic of Joris van Hoboken's thesis is the study of Platonic solids, Kleinian singularities, and ADE (Cartan) classification, which are all important concepts in mathematics and theoretical physics.

2. Can you explain the significance of Platonic solids in mathematics?

Platonic solids, also known as regular polyhedra, are three-dimensional shapes composed of identical regular polygons. They have been studied extensively for their mathematical beauty and symmetry, and have applications in fields such as geometry, crystallography, and graph theory.

3. What are Kleinian singularities and how are they related to Platonic solids?

Kleinian singularities are points on a surface where the surface is not smooth or well-defined. In Joris van Hoboken's thesis, he explores the relationship between Platonic solids and Kleinian singularities by showing that each Platonic solid can be inscribed in a Kleinian singularity, and that the symmetry of the Platonic solid can be used to classify the type of Kleinian singularity.

4. What is the ADE (Cartan) classification and how does it tie in with the other topics in the thesis?

The ADE (Cartan) classification is a way of organizing and classifying mathematical structures based on their symmetries. In Joris van Hoboken's thesis, he uses this classification to study the symmetries of Platonic solids and their relationship to Kleinian singularities.

5. What are the potential applications of Joris van Hoboken's research?

Joris van Hoboken's research has potential applications in various fields, including mathematics, physics, and materials science. Understanding the relationships between Platonic solids, Kleinian singularities, and ADE classification can help in the development of new mathematical and physical theories, as well as in the design of new materials with specific properties based on their symmetries.
