With all the kayaking, how does he find time for all his other hobbies? One busy fellow.

Excellent!

The paddling energy was taken from dehydrated food, sweets and fish, which were caught on the way.

A 3352 mile fishing trip.

I'm a pretty fair paddler, and am proficient with celestial navigation, although a Garmin eTrex with some spare batteries weighs a lot less!

A while back I ran across an interesting device designed to keep a ship on a rhumb line course at a steady latitude based on the height of observation of the sun. Just dial in the Ho and keep the shadow on the pipper. Half an hour later, take another shot and adjust the dial.
