I have PowerPoint 2011 for Mac. Is there an easy way to add equations, etc. into my slides?

Google "latex equation editor". You will find plenty of online editors that produce images from LaTeX input, which you can simply drag into your presentation.

There is a free piece of software called Mathcast that allows to easily type equation in a manner similar to latex; then, after the equation is rendered, you can simply copy it and paste into PowerPoint.
