In summary, "Escaping to an Alternate Reality: Diary of a Madman" is a fictional diary about a man who believes he can escape his reality and enter into an alternate one. The concept is not based on real science and the book may not be suitable for younger readers due to its complex themes. The idea for the book came from the author's fascination with the human mind and its ability to create alternate realities as a form of escapism. Whether or not the main character successfully escapes to an alternate reality is left for readers to discover in the book.

What's the theme called that describes the following situation:

You're not happy with your life, so you make an alternate reality for yourself (as i found to be evident in "Diary of a Madman")

Escapism?
Just a suggestion..

That's a good word for it. How about misogyny? Gogol kind of insults women in the story (e.g. he is offended at even the idea of a "donna" being the leader of Spain)

I haven't read the story (only your words on it) , so I can't say whether misogyny is a prominent part in it.
