In summary, a woman in Garden Grove, California drugged her estranged husband, tied him to a bed, and cut off his penis with a knife, throwing it down a garbage disposal. The man was conscious during the attack and surgeons were able to reconstruct his penis using tissue from other parts of his body. The incident brings to light the issue of genital reconstruction and the prevalence of accidents and violent attacks involving the genitalia.

Lorena Bobbit - Move Over... Holy ...

You can't make this stuff up, seriously...

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0713-penis-chopped-20110713,0,4047087.story"
Police say Catherine Kieu Becker drugged her estranged husband, tied him to a bed, cut off his penis with a knife and threw it down a garbage disposal in her home in Garden Grove.

The story did not specify if she turned it on after throwing it down the disposal... Let's hope not for his sake...

The http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20079093-504083.html" suggests otherwise however:
"He was conscious when his penis was removed," said Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale.

Nightengale says Becker put the penis in the garbage disposal and turned it on.

Rhody...

For historical perspective...

I suspected this was possible, wanted to wait for the official story, http://www.latimes.com/health/boostershots/la-heb-penis-repair-07142011,0,2278919.story" it is:
For reconstruction, surgeons most often use tissue from the arm, the back or the lower leg to function as something that looks like a penis, including the nerves and blood vessels. The tissue is formed around an artificial ureter, made from skin. The procedure, which involves several steps and a large team of specialists, involves a delicate reattachment of nerves, blood vessels and tissue. Only a few centers do the procedure, notably Dr. David Gilbert of the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, Va.

If the nerves are connected properly, Alter said, the patient may get erogenous sensations, particularly in the head of the penis. But because the arm does not contain the soft, spongy tissue typical of the penis, the patient cannot get an erection. That problem is overcome by implanting, well after the initial repairs have healed, a prosthetic implant, such as a hydraulic pump. Overall, "it's a long, complicated, expensive procedure," Alter said. But when it is finished, the patient can get an erection, have intercourse and climax.

Rhody...

So, thanks to the marvels of modern medicine, and the tendency of some people to keep the making the same relationship mistakes over and over, he has a chance to find a new psycho to replace the one that left him?

Funnily enough I had the chance to work on a regenerative medicine project for penile reconstruction. I didn't take it but the emphasis was to address some of the problems with current reconstruction, mainly that original function is not fully restored.

Unfortunately yes. Accidents, disease and violent attacks involving the genitalia are more common than people think.
