Lost significant figures through division by exact numbers

I like the formula you give for volume. I don't think I have seen it in junior high and high school level textbooks regularly. It does seem to steer clear of the problem. In math books of course the V=pi*r^2*h is the formula used as far as I know (maybe it is intuitively derived from area of base * height.)

At this point, I'm just batting this around now. I think I have gained from the responses to the thread that the example given in the book I'm referring to does not use the correct approach. I will tell the students to just stick with the rules for significant figures. Since the volume formula is all multiplication and division with no addition or subtraction, the answer should be rounded to 3 significant digits which is what the original measurement had.
