Material selection based on either U1 or U2 merit index

  1. Nov 15, 2016 #1
    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data
    Choose a component based on either U1 or U2 merit index and select what you believe to be the optimum material.

    2. Relevant equations
    U1=(σ)^2/E (Energy density)
    U2=(σ)^2/(Eρ) (specific energy density)

    3. The attempt at a solution

    I was going to use a spring damper from a bike as the component and apply U2, however are there any other more interesting examples I can use the merit indexes on?

    Thanks for the thread! This is an automated courtesy bump. Sorry you aren't generating responses at the moment. Do you have any further information, come to any new conclusions or is it possible to reword the post? The more details the better.
