Don't have office2007 so haven't tested it, but this MS add in looks interesting.

I'm not sure who would use it in the academic world really. In high school you probably have 2 years when you write short essays with simple equations and a few lab reports, then once at university level you start using latex.

I will admit however it looks rather user friendly and aesthetically pleasing.
