Homework Help: Mechanics of Solids

    1. Concrete pier with dimensions of 50' wide 100' tall and 5 feet deep. There are 2000 people standing on top each 200 pounds. Two holes are bore through the concrete one center 25 feet from the top the other 25 feet from the bottom, and it is on the side that is 50 feet wide right in the middle. If the density of the concrete is 156lb/ft^3 and the ultimate compression strength of concrete is 15000 psi, what are the two largest holes that can be drilled without the structure collapsing?

    I need help knowing how to approach this problem as this problem was assigned the first day of class and i am a little intimidated by it.
