Effect of Melting Bob on Pendulum Time Period?

In summary, the melting of ice on the bob of an oscillating pendulum will not affect the time period, as the period is independent of the bob's mass and gravity remains constant. This is due to Galileo's discoveries.

Hi,
Do you know the formula to calculate Time period of a pendulum ?

  • #3
Hint:
Melting of Ice reduces its weight.

  • #4
formula of time period is T=2*pi root over l/g
so how does reduction of weight helps out?...i mean time period is not dependant on mass and gravity remains constant at a particular place (weight =mg)...?

That is the trick. You almost got it.

Not sure how that's a hint.

The period of the pendulum is independent of the bob mass. Ah, Galileo's wonderful discoveries.

Seems you did not read my next post :p

so if g remains constant...then there is no effect on time period?

1. What is a melting bob of pendulum?

A melting bob of pendulum refers to a type of pendulum where the bob or weight at the end is made of a material that can melt, such as wax or ice. As the bob melts, the center of gravity changes, causing the pendulum to swing at a different rate.

2. How does a melting bob of pendulum work?

A melting bob of pendulum works by changing the center of gravity as the bob melts. This causes the pendulum to swing at a different rate, which can be used to measure the passage of time or demonstrate the effects of changing weight on a pendulum's motion.

3. What materials can be used for a melting bob of pendulum?

Common materials used for a melting bob of pendulum include wax, ice, and other substances that can melt at room temperature. However, any material that can change its state from solid to liquid can be used.

4. What is the purpose of a melting bob of pendulum?

The purpose of a melting bob of pendulum is to demonstrate the effects of changing weight on a pendulum's motion, as well as to measure the passage of time. It can also be used as a fun and educational science experiment.

5. Are there any real-life applications of a melting bob of pendulum?

While not commonly used in real life, a melting bob of pendulum can be used in scientific research to study the effects of changing weight on the motion of objects. It can also be used in educational settings to teach concepts of physics and time measurement.
