Mosaic in Lod Israel - way cool

In summary, a 1700-year-old mosaic floor was recently discovered in Lod, Israel, depicting various animals, plants, and Roman-era ships in remarkable condition. The piece was displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2010-2011 and was first found during construction in 1996. The video clip showcases the intricate details of the mosaic and the unique technique used to transport it without damage. It is both exciting and sad to think about the many lost treasures like this one that may still be waiting to be discovered.

Mosaic in Lod Israel - way cool !

This mosaic from antiquity recently caught my attention.
At first they found the tail of a tiger and eventually found a near
complete mosaic floor depicting birds, fish, animals, plants and
Roman-era ships. It is about 1700 yrs old. (made in 3rd century).
What is amazing, the artwork and colors are remarkably intact.

Yes, it is sad how many of these pieces may have been lost or destroyed,
but with discoveries like this, there is hope we may yet find more.
(this piece was hiding only three feet below the ground).

This clip includes more detailed description and close-ups of the subject themes.

Terrific! I'm amazed at their technique for handling the mosaic. They basically peeled it away from the soil, rolled it up and transported like a big heavy carpet - apparently with little (or no) damage?
