You would need to buy that domain name. You can buy domain names from numerous places, I hear www.godaddy.com is a good place to get one. A domain name of .com will be around $10 US/year some less, some more.

You would, also, need to learn how to use HTML (hyper-text markup language), or another web language, and then make your webpage. You could also pay someone, but I am not sure if you want to do that. You can check out free tutorials here: http://www.w3schools.com/

I think html and css are quite easy to use for basic things. You could also buy a book on html/css and learn it over the weekend.

edit... also if you are new to the web I recommend that you use firefox as your web browser. www.getfirefox.com

This will save you trouble in viruses/spyware and other things you do not want. I am assuming that you are using Internet Explorer, if you are not then you are probably fine.

buy a domain name and either purchase web space from a web host, or set up a server on your home computer and use a service like dynDNS to register your domain name to you IP address. I use DynDNS for my home server. I have not bought a domain name yet, I use on e of DynDNS's free ones.

oh, and please learn to type out a webpage using xhtml and css. do not use frontpage. its html code is junk and its web standards are as well.

this is separate things:
You have to pay and renew the name.
You have to pay for room on a server for your pages/images...

The price for a name is often cheap but a good web hosting may cost much more.

What if you would start with free web hosting? It would be much easier for you I think... and you wouldn't have to pay to start having your own web page. This way you can first learn how to use HTML and try to make your own web page to see how it looks. Then you can decide to buy your own domain... if your web page won't have many visitors or you won't even have a big web page but just a personal presentation web page... I don't really see a need to buy your own domain.

sure there is a reason.. just to have your own domain.

and he could simply set up a web server from his house and host his own site and use DynDNS's domain service. you can buy a domain name from them and they will manage your IP address in the DNS tables for you. it is especially good if your external IP address changes a lot like if you are on a DSL line.

This guy says he's new to web and HTML... how do you think someone like him is able to set up web server and host web pages? Even if he manages to do that... he's probably putting his computer at risk if he hasn't got any clue about security.

Anyway, the simplest way to start is to open a free account at hosting company and try it out... the most common is probably www.geocities.com

It's similiar to uploading files to your e-mail account only that you only upload html files... or you can use templates to make your web page. If you find this cool :approve: you can start thinking (and learning) how to set up a proper web page.

So can you tell us what securiy problems there mgiht be ?

Well his personal computer is probably really not so important but still he might have a lot of personal files on the computer like his electronic diary, personal photos, photos of his naked girlfriend or so... and I've had seen quite often that beginners set web root to "My documents" folder and don't disable directory browsing... this way anybody can see the contents of this folder and all of its subfolders and that's usually something ppl don't want cuz they put a whole bunch of stuff in those folders. This is just example of one simple stupid mistake.

Try to google a bit on this topic.

Anyway if you're hosting dynamic web pages there's a whole bunch of other things that can happen to you if some stupid jerk finds your page and doesn't like it. It's always recomended to have latest patches if you're exposing your computer and to only have neccessary ports open on your firewall.

Someone could root your server, then do a multiude of nasty things such as:

Host porn
Use as a SMTP gateway and spam everyone from you IP, untill you are blacklisted
Use your computer as a DDOS drone
Host masive MPEGS and you get a huge bill if you are paying per data
Proxy of your server and hack the FBI :-)
Install a Key logger trojan and then sniff your internet banking passwords, illegally gain entry to your internet bank account and make a huge withdrawl
Steal your ICQ log and then blackmail you, or they will tell your Girlfriend you have been cybering...

Want me to go on? Maybe I am just paranoid

Yes, I still want you to go on, but next post, tell me what to do so not to be an idiot ?
