Homework Help: Need help ly

  1. Nov 30, 2009 #1
    Need help urgently

Q1 ) a pile driver hammer of mass 195kg falls freely through a distance of 3.1m to strike a pile of mass 450kg and drives it 240mm into the ground. The hammer does not rebound when driving the pile.

determine the average resistance of the ground.

i am required to solve this problem in two ways.

    1) by making use of the priciple of conservation of momentum and D'Alembert's principle.

    2) by making use of the principle of conserveration of energy

Having solved the problem using both methods, compare and contrast D'Alembert's principle with the principle of conservation of energy.

i am completely lost with this question as we are yet to discuss D'Alemberts principle until after we have researched and answered this one :(

any help would be much appreciated.
