Need help solving for a variable

    Recall the quadratic equation,

    [tex] x = \frac{-b \pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a} [/tex]

    In the expression you have, note:
    [tex] a = \frac{1}{2}a_y [/tex]
    [tex] b = v_0 [/tex]
    [tex] c = -y [/tex]
