Need help understanding ensemble average

  1. Jul 28, 2010 #1
    Hi everyone,

I've recently entered a slightly different subfield of research in which ensemble averages are used profusely. I haven't yet taken stat mech and we didn't discuss this in my quantum courses, so I am wondering - can anyone please give me a clear definition of how one computes this?

I can only find stat mech uses/definitions online, but I'm doing some data analysis work and don't know what "ensemble" means in the context of gravitational waves. Can anyone help?

Also, are there any convenient properties, such as <ab> = <a> <b>? I can't try to proof these/disprove them until I have an actual definition of what <> means...
