Non-academic activities that have helped you academically?

Having hobbies that can be directly related to a field of academia would be the ideal scenario.

For example, I received a telescope this December (as per my request), and have read a lot about astronomy so that I can actually use my telescope effectively, and not have it gather dust. In that process, I have learned a substantial amount about astronomy, most of it occuring indirectly from random information I found on the internet.

It basically allows for me to learn what could be considered "academic" information, when all I'm really doing is pursuing a hobby at a very amateur level, simply because I like stars :approve:

I work at home. Imagine the long hrs. From 3D to fractal to Quasi-Monte Carlo method (all the math and scripts involved) to particle dynamic simulation to 'ID'? to history(science and religion) to Evolution to GR to QP to astrophysics to cosmology? to PF!. Quite a ride.
