SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the treatment of rubber in non-marking shoes, specifically sneakers with black soles. Non-marking soles are designed to prevent leaving black skid marks on surfaces like gym floors. The key distinction is that thermoplastic rubber typically leaves marks, while crosslinked (thermoset) rubber does not. This treatment is essential for maintaining clean and safe environments in athletic settings.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of rubber types: thermoplastic and thermoset
  • Knowledge of footwear materials and their properties
  • Familiarity with non-marking designations in athletic footwear
  • Basic concepts of surface interactions in sports environments
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of thermoplastic vs. thermoset rubber
  • Explore the manufacturing processes of non-marking shoe soles
  • Investigate the impact of different rubber treatments on athletic performance
  • Learn about maintenance practices for preserving gym floor surfaces
USEFUL FOR

Footwear designers, athletic facility managers, and consumers interested in purchasing non-marking athletic shoes.

My wife just got a new pair of sneakers with black soles that have a 'non marking' designation. Anyone know how the rubber is treated to be 'non marking'?

For those that don't understand, 'non marking' means that the soles won't leave black skid marks on gym floors etc. when cavorting about.

Thermoplastic rubber leaves black marks. Crosslinked (thermoset) rubbers don't mark.
