Main Question or Discussion Point

Every day I receive several spam e-mails with "Obama forgiveness" in the subject. (I don't even live in US.) Do others have similar experiences?

Oh, yes! Republicans Ted Cruz and Ioni Ernst think I live in Iowa, Democrat Tammy Duckworth wants to be elected in Illinois, the Smithsonian wants me to renew my membership I never had, and some who I have forgotten ...

What really drives me mad about it, is this american attitude that everybody with a .com email address is supposed to live in the states.

Nope. I use gmail. I don't recommend it, but I have little trouble with spam.

Why do you not recommend it?

Anyway, I use an official e-mail address from my institution.

I don't think it has to do with an "American attitude." I get plenty of spam targeted at Indians, even though I've never even been in that part of the world. Spammers often don't target, they just spray as wide as they can, hoping some of it will land in the right mailbox.

The same thing goes on through land line telephone; telemarketers. Not me so much, but my poor girlfriend gets hammered by them.

Yes, but this doesn't explain the peak at american politicians. It is not actual spam, it's part of their real election campaigns. Even the Smithsonian address doesn't look like spam but I'm not quite sure with this one. As a nice side effect I'm always informed what's going on in American politics. Cruz' emails have been real fun. I think I can explain all of them without the hypothesis of 'American attitude' beside how they first found my account. However, it once, long ago has been an American address and possession changed several times throughout the years. But what is obvious is the discrepancy between the inside view of American politicians and the outside view of a global citizen using a global tool called internet. I guess one can find this kind of discrepancy in many groups. School teachers here are an example for it.
I have another address which I use in cases I need access to sites where you have to register. This one is really full of spam of all kinds. I once wondered why I have so much spanish spam and figured out that another guy uses the same, but at least similar address. His homepage has been full of naked dudes in unambiguous poses ....
