Open and Closed Pipes

  1. Apr 14, 2010 #1
    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data
    An organ pipe has two successive harmonics with frequencies 1760 Hz and 2160 Hz. Is this an open or stopped pipe? Which two harmonics are these? What is the length of the pipe?

    2. Relevant equations
    L=v/2f

    3. The attempt at a solution
    I'm really just having trouble with the first question. How can you tell what kind of pipe it is?

    For closed pipe, nth harmonic is
    fn = (2n-1)fo, where fo is the fundamental frequency.
    And f(n+1) = (2n+1)fo,
    Solve for n. If n is integer, the pipe is closed. Otherwise it is open.
