    What kind of optimization problems are you talking about? One independent variable or multidimensional? With or without derivatives? With or without constraints? Any special type (Linear, Quadratic), etc.). They are all different.

    The first derivative should be 0 and the second derivative should be positive. That would be a local minimum. Give more information and you might get more information.

    You haven't really narrowed things down. Whether you're dealing with a function of one variable, or two or more, a technique that is used is differentiation.
