Oscilloscope question

  1. Oct 20, 2009 #1
Does manipulating the controls of an oscilloscope change the characteristics of the input signal being evaluated?

Can someone please explain this to me?

    Thank you.

An oscilloscope is a tool for examining the signal. The electron beam in the oscilloscope's cathode ray tube is deflected by the varying electrical charges on the plates situated around the beam. These varying electrical charges are supplied by the signal. So the oscilloscope simply displays the effect of the input signal on the electron beam (as seen in the trace on the screen). It does not change the signal.
