    But what exactly?

I beleive pepto bismol is C7H5BiO4

well, yes, Bismuth subsalicylate is C7H5BiO4, but the problem is, there are ALOT of other ingredients in Pepto bismol (specifically: benzoic acid, flavor, magnesium aluminum silicate, methylcellulose, red 22, red 28, saccharin sodium, salicylic acid, sodium salicylate, sorbic acid, water.) so you are going to have alot of impurities in your products. (plus, a few of the 'inactive ingredients' will likely react with HCl also)
