PhD in U.K.? How is it done? How much does it cost?

  1. Oct 9, 2012 #1
My spouse was offered permanent employment in the UK for a position that would start next year.

I'm currently in a Physics PhD program here in the US. I already have my Masters degree, but only recently have begun research in earnest (up until now, I was taking the core courses required of my program). I would like to continue my PhD, but it doesn't seem feasible for me to continue with my current school, so I would have to find a PhD program in the UK.

So what is a PhD like in the UK? Do you have to pay fees/tuition, or are those waived/paid for as you do your dissertation research? Besides Cambridge and Oxford, what are other good schools for a physics PhD?

    Any other advice or tips?
