I've lost count of the number of students I've had who start out by believing that decimal numbers are real numbers

But decimal numbers ARE real numbers...

Yes, whoops, I didn't explain that very well. The point is that decimal numbers are not irrational, and I've had students who think that decimal numbers are just another name for real numbers.
