Pizza Cutting - need help fast!

  1. Oct 8, 2008 #1
Explain, using the laws of physics, why pizza chefs use “pizza cutters” to slice pies into sections, as opposed to equally sharp knives.

Your answer should not simply use words, but rather should include diagrams and quantitative analysis.

I'm not even sure how to begin answering this question.. Any help that anyone can give will be very greatly appreciated!! :]

You might try assuming the coefficient of friction between the cheese and the pizza cutter is the same as the coefficient of friction between the cheese and the knife (since they are equally sharp) and then analyze the force each one exerts on the cheese as it cuts.

You should also consider the coefficent of friction between the cheese and the crust.
Remember what happens when you try and cut one with a knife
