In summary, it is possible to theoretically predict half lives by determining the width of a resonance's peak, which can be associated with its lifetime. This can be done by finding the cross section as a function of energies or calculating the time needed for a particle to leave the potential via tunneling. For beginners in particle physics, some recommended books can be found in this thread.

How can we theoretically predict half lives?

It depends on the width of a resonance's peak...
If the width is [itex]Γ[/itex] then you can associate the resonance's lifetime by:
[itex]Γ=\frac{1}{t}[/itex]
So in general, to find the width you need to find the cross section as a function of energies... eg Breit Wigner cross section distribution...

In another way, you can calculate the time needed for a part of your particle to leave the potential via a tunneling - for example an alpha particle leaving a heavy nuclei in the potential of strong+coulomb interaction...

Thanks for your reply. I am new to particle physics. Can you suggest any good book for a beginner?

Check out the books listed in this thread.

1. What is the definition of half life?

The half life of a substance is the amount of time it takes for half of the substance to decay or break down into a different substance.

2. How is half life calculated?

The calculation for half life involves dividing the natural log of 2 by the decay constant of the substance. This can vary depending on the type of substance being studied.

3. What factors can affect the prediction of half lives?

The prediction of half lives can be affected by various factors such as temperature, pH levels, and the presence of other substances that may interact with the substance being studied.

4. What is the importance of predicting half lives?

Predicting half lives is important in understanding the stability of a substance and how it will behave over time. This information can be used in various fields such as medicine, environmental science, and nuclear energy.

5. How accurate are predictions of half lives?

The accuracy of predictions of half lives can vary depending on the complexity of the substance being studied and the factors that may affect its decay. With advancements in technology and research, predictions are becoming more accurate but may still have some margin of error.
