I am interested in studying at least the basics of gravitational waves. How much knowledge do I need to have about waves in general before procceding?
Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime that are created when massive objects accelerate, such as when two black holes merge.
Gravitational waves were first detected in 2015 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) when it observed the merger of two black holes.
To study gravitational waves, one must have a strong understanding of Einstein's theory of general relativity, as well as a background in physics and mathematics. Knowledge of astrophysics and astronomy is also helpful.
Gravitational wave research has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the universe and its origins. It can also be used to study the properties of black holes and other astrophysical phenomena.
Gravitational waves can be detected using specialized instruments, such as interferometers, that can measure tiny changes in the length of space caused by passing gravitational waves.
