Problem faced with car engine

  1. Jun 8, 2010 #1
let use injector as an example
Many of the fuel injector problems are centered around the dirty fuel injector. If a fuel injector is dirty i.e. the injector is clogged, the fuel spraying into the engine is going to be restricted. Hence if the fuel injector is dirty you are going to face problems while starting and accelerating because these are the times when your engine is going to need more fuel and the fuel injector is not going to be able to supply it because of the clogging. A dirty fuel injector may also cause problems such as poor fuel economy as in an effort to spray the fuel, it might end up spraying more than required.
then as a mechanical enginerr how can we reduce majority of this problems

    Fuel filter design
    Fuel tank design
    Refinery filtration and quality assurance
    Robust injector design
Effective on board diagnostics (clogged filter, crap fuel etc)

    What do you think?

    This is homework, right?

the internal combustion engine has been around for over 100 years...with proper maintenance it can run over 100,000 miles. very few IC are down due to manufacturing defects. the evolution of mass production has just about eliminated all the old myths of defective manufacturing.

I realise that, but noted that the OP was asking what a mechanical engineer can do about these problems, not the average car owner.

    But yes, clearly homework.

    OP what do you think?!

i feel the location of the injector along with the material of injector is quite well responsible for accumulation of dirt on the injector.
