Problem with frequency meter

  1. Mar 13, 2006 #1
In quantum mechanics lab our frequency meter shows ~50 Hz when it is plugged in to a device which is not turned on. Is this a problem or an effect that I don't know?

It is probably detecting the mains frequency, which is usually 50 Hz. Many frequency detection devices have 50 Hz and 100 Hz narrowband band-stop filters built into them for this reason.
